DC Stick Welder:

On the low end of price you can get a small AC-only welder, but with the 100ST you get the flexibility of DC (all electrodes can be used DC) along with smoothness and arc stability. I haven't ordered the TIG torch to add on, but it's great to have that option for the future.

AC vs. DC - Welding Productivity

The 6011 rods are the AC version of the popular 6010 welding rods for DC. The 6010 have a high cellulose sodium-type coating, can penetrate deeply and are used for many applications in the field. Both are fast-freeze rods, meaning the weld puddle changes from liquid to solid rapidly, and are used primarily by pipefitters and pipe welders.

sorry you are stuck with those rods, but i am not sure its worth changing welders if you inverter performs well otherwise. you might try using a 6011 if you can get one or 2 rods . they are designed to weld on ac or dc so they might run better with you inverter. and they might not. I have used them with a miller dynasty but the dynasty also ran .

DC vs. AC Polarity for SMAW - lincolnelectric

In most cases, DC is the preferred welding polarity. Whether it is DC+ (electrode positive or "reverse") polarity or DC- (electrode negative or "straight") polarity, DC produces smoother welding output than AC. Figure 1 is a graph of DC welding output vs. time. The output is at a consistent current level all the time.

Illusion, I'd stick with the proper rods for the current you're using. The AC and DC weld puddles have different characterisitcs as the DC has constant polarities of the work clamp and the electrode while AC is constantly switching polarity at the rate of 60 times per second in most areas of the U.S..

Jan 07, 2013 · A 6010 and a 6011 are virtually the same rod, except the 6010 is designed for DC welding. 6013 is generally considered as a sheet metal rod. It has a very heavy flux coat that often lets it be used as a "drag rod" -- you just set the rod on the steel at the right angle and drag it along - there is no need to try to hold an arc length.
